As many of you know, I'm an Army wife and mom running as the
Democratic candidate for Congress against Republican incumbent
John Carter in central Texas.
Recently, I was privileged to be at our local VA hospital on Valentine's Day for their annual tribute to our veterans. Carter was also invited but didn't show.
Carter's office did send a rep who told us Carter must be real busy because he wouldn't normally miss the chance to spend the afternoon with Miss Texas who was touring the VA hospital.... It seems he missed the point.
Along with many other volunteers, I handed out balloons, candy, and cards made by our local school children. Many of the vets I met were a little embarrassed by the attention. But I saw a lot of smiles on the faces of men and women bearing the scars and wounds of their service.
So, I was surprised last Thursday when John Carter managed to make time in his busy schedule to show up at yet another press conference for Travis County Defendant, Tom DeLay, and once again voice his support for his hero and mentor.
Carter actually compared DeLay to a World War I lieutenant fearlessly leading his men in battle.
Yet, when Congressman, and highly decorated Vietnam Veteran and Marine Colonel, Jack Murtha suggested a timetable for bringing our troops home, John Carter accused him of "surrendering to the terrorists" and "wanting to take the cowardly way out" of Iraq.
John Carter has never served a day in the military.
As a veteran's wife, and the mother of two boys serving on active duty - the oldest is in Iraq, I’m appalled when Carter praises DeLay as a hero and condemns Murtha as a coward. Carter claims to “support our troops” but can’t make time for our veterans. Carter obviously does not begin to understand or respect their sacrifice and service.
I’m running for Congress because my boys, and every man and woman in uniform, deserve a Congress that is worthy of their sacrifice and service. You and I deserve a Congress of unquestioned integrity. When I’m in Congress I will fight as hard for our veterans, for you and your family, as my boys are fighting for our country.
